Week 5: Strategies for Conflict

As the end of the school year is approaching, my next door colleague who teaches Sure Start, and I are cleaning, organizing, and sorting so everything is in its place before we head out for the summer.  This may seem like a productive task, however, we share one storage space.  My colleague has already mentioned to me that sharing this space is difficult for her as she has never had to share it before.  Since I am new to this school, we had to share this area due to limited space.  One strategy that we are using in the win/win approach in that we continue to discuss our underlying needs, recognize our individual differences, and continue to stay open (www.crnhq.org).  When one has a different idea, we discuss it, problem solve, compromise so we can move on.  Conflict often arises when we are struggling to get a share of some limited resource, such as time, money or attention (O’Hair & Weimann, 2012).  In this case, it’s space.  Another strategy we are using is active listening.  We are using empathy make sense of how the other feels over the decisions we are making.  So far, it’s been productive, but using these strategies has helped to ease the frustration….especially during this time of year when we are all trying to get our lists checked off.

  1. The win-win solution is always a better approach in conflict resolution. I am sure that you will build a stronger relationship with her as you apply the communication principles we have learned this week.
